About the exhibition:
On 25 February 2012, in cooperation with Omnibus ensemble, Art and Fact gallery will represent the collection «Gipsy Madonnas» by Alexander Barkovsky.
The author graduated from the Art School named after P.P Byenkov and refers his collection to ethnic art. His characters are gypsies of the Central Asia (mugat, lyulya). The artist used photo collage to create the imaginary gipsy land with ancient sights of Bukhara and Samarkand on the background.
The collection reflects gipsy life and beliefs. Wooden frames for these works, made in style of children's cradles – «beshiks» with stamping on corners as on wedding chests are very symbolical. The passé partout to photos reminds traditional Bukhara golden embroidery decorating their festive clothes.
During his work on the project, the artist transferred ordinary photography to lithograph. The black prints were originally printed on a white paper toned with green tea and then were manually painted with water colors. Along with painting, installation, video art and other modern types of art, Aleksand Barkovsky’s photography is one of possible forms of self-expression. At this exhibition, his collection will be accompanied with video installation based on Raphael’s Sistine Madonna.
Just like in all Crossroads’ projects, live music of the ensemble Omnibus will create a special atmosphere.
