• An exclusive opportunity for B2B meetings
• A press conference with the participation of the directors of Uzbekenergo and Uzsuvenergo
Uzbekistan's energy resources and development prospects
• Uzbekistan’s electric power industry is a key sector of the country’s economy. It has significant productive, scientific and technical capacity, and impacts strongly on the development of the national economy.
• Uzbekistan has significant reserves of energy resources, and the energy sector is a pillar of the economy. Since 2001, Uzbekistan’s power industry has operated in the framework of the State Joint-Stock Company Uzbekenergo, which was established as an open joint stock company and includes coal industry businesses within its structure.
• In accordance with the decree of the President “On the priorities of the country’s industrial development for 2011-2015” adopted in December 2010, it is planned to implement 44 investment projects totalling 5.2 billion dollars in the energy sector.
• 15 projects are planned for the modernisation and construction of thermal power plants; 9 in the hydropower sector; and 15 in the development of electrical and distribution networks. A number of projects are aimed at improving the electricity consumption metering system.
• In the field of thermal power, a project is underway to expand the Navoi thermal power plant, where a unit with a capacity of 478 MW is being built. Another project is the modernisation of the Tashkent thermal power plant, which provides heat and electricity to the capital. At the plant it is planned to install gas turbines with a capacity of 27 MW. The first part of the project has already started, and is being implemented with support from Japan.
• Another major current project is the expansion of the Tolimarjon thermal power plant, with the construction of two 450 MW combined-cycle units. The project is being implemented with funds from the Asian Development Bank, World Bank, Fund for Reconstruction and Development of Uzbekistan, and Uzbekenergo’s own funds.
• In Uzbekistan’s energy sector, much attention is being given to fuel diversification. In this regard, a transition is underway to year-round burning of coal mined at Angren, from the first to the fifth power generating units at the Namangan thermal power plant. In addition, within the Uzbekenergo system, a power generating unit designed to burn low grade fuel with a capacity of 130 MW is being built at the Angren plant.
• In the period 2011-2015, a large part, up to 90%, of existing hydropower plants will be modernised, including the major Charvak hydropower plant, Tashkent hydropower plant cascade, and others. This is due to the fact that these facilities have been operating for 50-70 years, and have exhausted their resources and are obsolete. The modernisation will improve the operation and capacity of the plants, and extend their service life. The total cost of upgrading these facilities is estimated at 190 million dollars.
• Work has begun on the construction of new hydropower facilities, in particular small hydropower plants. One of these facilities is the 8 MW Kamolot hydropower plant in the Chirchik-Boysun tract. It will enable 35 million kilowatt-hours of electricity to be generated per year, and save 11 million cubic metres of natural gas.
• Uzbekenergo is giving a lot of attention to the use of alternative energy sources, and is introducing renewable energy sources into energy production. Construction has begun of an experimental 750 kW power plant, costing about 1.9 million dollars. This project is being carried out with the company’s own funds. The project is the first step in the creation of a fleet of wind-generating units planned for 2012.
• A lot of work is being done to modernise electricity networks. Construction has begun of a 500 kV line running 218km between the Tolimarjon thermal power plant, Sogdiana substation and a major 500 kV substation. The completion of the project, which is being implemented with funds from the World Bank, is scheduled for 2013.
• With support from Export-Import Bank of China, construction has begun of a 500 kV power line running 130km at the Syrdarya plant and Angren plant. This will ensure the reliability of the electricity supply in the central and southern regions of the country. Also, in order to ensure a reliable electricity supply, a number of projects are being carried out to modernise 220 kV power lines. Several lines and substations are being built to supply power to people in the Fergana Valley.
• Every year, Uzbekistan increases the volume of electricity for export, particularly to the south. Over the past three years, exports of electricity have increased from 800 million kilowatt-hours in 2008 to 1.2 billion kilowatt-hours last year.
• In total, the implementation of the decree of the President “On the priorities of the country’s industrial development for 2011-2015” in the energy sector should result in 2150 MW of generating capacity, 1000 km of power transmission lines and 2200 MW of power transforming capacity.
This will save 1 billion cubic metres of gas, reduce electricity losses during transportation by 437 million kilowatt-hours, and increase the share of coal in the country’s energy balance from 3.9% to 12% in 2015.
Improving the electricity metering system will reduce electricity losses by up to 1.8 billion kilowatt-hours.
Priority areas for deepening economic reforms in the energy sector
The strategic objectives for the development of the electric power industry in Uzbekistan consists of the following tasks:
• deepening of economic reforms, and formation and development of electric power market
• reliable supply to the economy and population of high-quality electric power
• technical upgrading and modernisation of power plants, improving the efficiency of their production
• reduction of the negative impacts of energy production on the environment
• further development of integration processes within the Central Asian energy system
Exhibition objectives
Demonstrate scientific and industrial equipment for use in Uzbekistan’s energy sector; attract more partners and customers; expand the market for the products of domestic and foreign manufacturers; and increase cooperation between businesses, organisations, firms and investors.
The exhibition demonstrates the development and potential in key industry sectors, such as energy, electrical equipment, the coal industry, construction, communications, the oil and gas industry, and utilities sector.
